Hi, I'm Daniel 👋

Engineering leader for electronics & software at Oerlikon, based in Buchs SG (CH). Former open-source developer — Plone, Django, GitLab. I wrote here about CI/CD, containers and Python; these days it’s more about enabling teams, the software development lifecycle, tech and AI → all posts.

I was born in 1982 and grew up in Austria, where I attended a technical high school before studying computer science and later completing an MBA in technology & innovation in 2023.

After starting as a software developer in open-source communities such as Plone, Django and GitLab, I shifted my focus to building high-performing software teams at international companies like Zumtobel, Hilti and Oerlikon. Today I’m responsible for the electronics and software development teams at Oerlikon.¹

Fun fact about my nickname

My community nickname is saily, though lately I tend to use my last name more often. It was given to me in music class back in school: one day I was playing ⛵ Sailing by Rod Stewart and my schoolmates started singing “I’m saily” — from that day on they called me saily.
